Investigators probing a carjacking which occurred on Sunday night have managed to recover the vehicle which had been stripped and repainted.

Police yesterday said that several persons including a member of the force and a mechanic of Patentia, West Bank Demerara have been arrested.

Police in Regional Division 4(B) had been probing a carjacking committed on a 34-year-old taxi driver, Rameshwar Singh, of Number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. His vehicle, a white Toyota Premio, HD 2132, was stolen on Sunday night.

Acting on intelligence received, police ranks visited  a location at Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, where an older-model white Premio, HD 2387, was found abandoned in a yard.

This car, investigations revealed, was allegedly used to hit Singh’s car from behind in the vicinity of Providence, East Bank Demerara, which caused him to stop. When the taxi driver exited his vehicle to check on the damage, he was pounced on and robbed of his car and cash.

Police yesterday stated that as part of the probe into the theft of the vehicle, a mechanic has been questioned. The information given led police to the residence of another mechanic in La Grange, West Bank Demerara, where a search was conducted and parts of the stolen vehicle were discovered.

At the time of the discovery, the police said parts of the car were already sprayed in a different colour. The mechanic was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, at about 08:00 hrs on Wednesday, a police rank who is presently on seven days sick leave was contacted by the investigators and questioned. The rank who is now on close arrest took the investigators to Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, and pointed out a freshly sprayed-over Gunmetal grey Toyota Premio, said to be the car that was stolen from Singh.

Despite being in a different colour, the victim and the investigators were able to identify the car from the chassis number. Some of the parts are still missing from the car.

Investigations are continuing.
