The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will hold a special general meeting on Thursday at Olympic House.

This is according to the GOA’s Administrative Officer Nalini Mc Koy.

According to a high ranking GOA official who preferred not to be named, the special general meeting is being held to look at the new constitution of the body.

At the meeting the General Council of the GOA which comprises representatives of the national associations/federations affiliated to the GOA will be tasked with either ratifying the constitution or parts of the constitution or rejecting it altogether.

According to the Source, the new constitution has proposed recommendations from its parent body, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). During the meeting which commences from 17:30hrs at its headquarters, the GOA’s member affiliates will determine in large part the direction sports will undertake for next four years and beyond, said the high ranking GOA official.

The constitutional review has been ongoing for more than two years  and some of the key constitutional provisions for change includes

a recommendation by the IOC in its governance principles to limit the age of Executive Members of the IOC and its affiliates members of national Olympic Committees ( GOA in this instance) to seventy 70 years.  Institution of terms limits for serving presidents. This was a motion brought up at the last AGM held in 2016  by the Guyana Squash Association and unanimously agreed on by the General Council that incumbent  Juman-Yassin’s term at the helm should have taken effect from 2012.

The adoption of a Finance Committee to manage the funds of the GOA’s asset management among others.

The General Council will also look at the issue of non-functioning associations/federations since it  is felt that several national associations/federations are just vote props, as they do not host any national activities, AGM,  have no functional executive committees or councils, but turn up for elections of the GOA.
