Raywatram Mooloo, of Number 58 Village, Corentyne, who fatally beat his common-law wife, Gomattie Ramsingh back in 2017 with an iron rod and a piece of wood, yesterday opted to plead guilty to manslaughter at the High Court in Berbice.

Mooloo, also known as ‘Adesh’ and ‘Cow Curry,’ 31, of Lot 36 Number 58 Village, Corentyne, appeared before Justice Simone Morris–Ramlall where he entered the plea. A probation report was ordered and he will return to court on July 12 for sentencing.

Representing the state was Attorney at Law, Nafeeza Baig while Mooloo was represented by Attorney at Law, Surihya Sabsook.

In June, 2017, Mooloo used both an iron rod and a piece of wood to hit Ramsingh about her body. He reportedly hit the woman with the iron rod in her head.

Ramsingh, before succumbing in hospital, recounted the beating in a video recording, where she said that Mooloo, who is a fisherman, dragged her by her hair up the stairs. She had said that the attack was a result of her taking Mooloo’s drugs and throwing it away. She said he demanded money to make a second purchase of drugs but after she did not provide him with any money he went into a rage.

A post-mortem examination subsequently revealed that Ramsingh died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, spinal injuries, and other internal injuries.

Mooloo, who went into hiding following Ramsingh’s death, had surrendered himself into police custody in the presence of his attorney at the New Amsterdam Police Station days after the attack, and police had said that while being interrogated by investigators, he confessed to beating the woman to death.

Ramsingh was a mother of three.
