Corentyne man gets 16 years after pleading guilty to killing wife

A Corentyne man was yesterday sentenced to 16 years in prison at the High Court in Berbice, after he opted to plead guilty to manslaughter in the death of his wife in 2017.

Raywatram Mooloo, also known as ‘Adesh’, and ‘Cow Curry,’ 31, of Lot 36 Number 58 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Justice Navindra Singh where he entered the plea yesterday.

He was then sentenced to 16 years in prison with time spent on remand to be deducted.

Mooloo’s sentence initially started at 30 years. However, 1/3 was deducted after which ten more years were  subtracted since he made a voluntary disclosure of the offence to the police. However, six years were then added to the remaining years since the matter was a domestic violence one – leaving the accused with 16 years in total.

Representing the state was attorney-at-law, Nafeeza Baig, while Mooloo was represented by attorney-at-law, Surihya Sabsook.

In June, 2017, Mooloo was arrested after he was accused of the murder of his common-law wife, Gomattie Ramsingh. Based on agreed-upon facts at the court, the accused hit the woman’s head three times during a scuffle on a landing after which she tumbled down the stairs.

During a subsequent scuffle, the woman was pushed down the stairs causing her to fall on two concrete blocks.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she died due to blunt force trauma to the head with cerebral haemorrhage, a fractured spine and a fractured breast bone with haemothorax and retroperitoneal haemorrhage.
