An operation conducted inside the Mazaruni Prison unearthed close to 1600 grammes of cannabis and a number of prohibited items, the Guyana Police Force said on Tuesday.  In a statement, police said the search was conducted at the Mazaruni Prison by ranks of the Bartica Police Station in collaboration with ranks from the prison.

While searching the upper dormitory, a prison officer found a black plastic bag lodged in the ceiling of the structure. Upon further examination, the bag was found to contain a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana.

The suspected marijuana  was taken to the Bartica Police Station, weighed and it amounted to 1,580 grams.

Additionally, the police said their operation discovered 17 cellular phones with batteries, 22 packs of Pall Mall cigarettes, 24 improvised weapons, six scissors, five cigarette lighters, two broken mirrors, four cell phone chargers, two smoking utensils and two knives.
