Pottaya, Algoo lead Berbice U17 to victory

Matthew Pottaya and Sanjay Algoo’s efforts ensured Berbice’s victory over Rising Stars by 13 runs on Wednesday as the Guyana Cricket Board Under-17 inter-county tournament continued at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.

Rising Stars won the toss and inserted Berbice, who posted 132 for nine from their 45-over quota. Rising Stars, in reply, were contained to 119 all out in 45 overs.

Pottaya was the principal scorer for Berbice, hitting three sixes and one four during his 53-ball 44 which came to an end when he was bowled by Wavell Allen. Extras had the next best tally of 28.

Romesh Bharat and Algoo chipped in with 15 runs each as the only other two batsmen to reach double figures.

Allen ended with 3-15 including the wickets of Algoo and Avishkar Persaud, while Nityanand Mathura snatched 2-21.

In the chase, Rampersaud Ramnauth and Anthony Khan made 11 runs each while Kevin Kisten was patient in his 14-run cameo, but Rising Stars quickly slipped from 52-3 to 68-8. Nyron Hicks top scored with 29 from 40 balls while Allen returned to make 25 from 38 balls as the pair shared an even 50-run partnership for the ninth wicket before both were run out off of successive deliveries.

Algoo was the principal wicket taker, returning 3-20 while Afraz Budhoo and Salim Khan picked up two wickets each for 20 and 21 runs respectively.
