Cop to be charged with obstruction in Bacchus case on promotions list

Sergeant Dameion McLennon, one of two cops to be charged with obstructing the course of justice in the Quindon Bacchus case (See story on page three) is on the recently announced police promotions list.

This left the police scrambling last night to explain how his name came to be on the list.

In a statement, the police force said that it is aware that there exists on social media certain insinuations about the promotion of  Sergeant 20944 D. Mc Lennon.

The police said that the process for promoting members of the organization involves a vetting process that addresses matters contained in personnel files, and investigations that clearly show that the member who is a subject of vetting for promotion may be implicated in the perpetration of a serious crime or egregious discipline conduct.

“The circumstance relating to Sergeant 20944 D. Mc Lennon did not initially reveal that he might be implicated in the perpetration of any crime of misconduct due to the operation at East Coast Demerara that resulted in an unfortunate death. Further, there was not anything incriminating in his personnel files to affect consideration for promotion.

“Further, the vetting process and subsequent promotion were concluded prior to the Legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions received on July 4, 2022.

“Importantly, the Force is delivering on its undertaking to the bereaved family, relatives of the deceased, and the Nation in allowing the Police Complaints Authority to conduct an impartial investigation.

“This is evident because the policemen involved, including Sergeant 20944 D. Mc Lennon will be appearing in the Magistrate’s Court on July 5, 2022.

“Nevertheless, the issue concerning Sergeant 20944 D. Mc Lennon would be appropriately addressed pursuant to the law”, the police force said.
