GAW ropes in Shamsi, Klaasen, Sterling and Ingram

Five-time finalists Guyana Amazon Warriors have roped in the services of South African trio Tabraiz Shamsi, Colin Ingram and Heinrich Klaasen and Ireland’s Paul Sterling as their international signings ahead of this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Also joining the team for a fifth season is 43-year-old South African leg-spinner, Imran Tahir. Tahir has played 43 matches for the Warriors, taking 60 wickets with a best of 4-22 and an economy rate of under six.

Shamsi is currently the third highest-ranked bowler in T20Is, holding the top spot for the better part of 2021. The left-arm wrist spinner previously represented St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots where he picked up 33 wickets in 27 matches.

Ingram, 37, has loads of experience, playing in 317 T20s. The left-hander has played 10 matches in the CPL, turning out for St. Lucia Zouks and Trinbago Knight Riders in the past.

Meanwhile, Klaasen will make his CPL debut. The wicketkeeper/batsman has already featured in the Indian Premier League for Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 120 T20s, the right hander strikes at 135 with 13 half centuries under his belt.

Another tournament debutant will be  Sterling who has represented Ireland in over 100 T20Is. The belligerent all-rounder boasts a strike rate of 143 from 290 T20s to go with 75 wickets.

These players will complement the local contingent including Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Gudakesh Motie.

Warriors will have to fill six more spots today in the CPL draft. The tournament gets underway from August 31.
