Wiltshire, Ince-Carvalhal and Sumner make winning starts

Shomari Wiltshire, Samuel Ince-Carvalhal and Safirah Sumner made winning starts when the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships commenced yesterday at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue and the Georgetown Club, Camp Street.

Wiltshire defeated Arjan Trehan of Jamaica 11-1, 11-2 and 11-1 in the Boy’s U19 division while Ince-Carvahal defeated Dylan Vaz of Jamaica 11-4, 11-3 and 11-2 in the same division. Ince-Carvahal also defeated Jace Jervis of the Cayman Islands 6-11, 11-8, 11-3 and 11-4.

Sumner defeated Milanna Lamontagne of the Cayman Islands 10-12, 11-4, 11-5, and 14-12 in the Girls U15 division. She also bested Mariella Young of Barbados 11-6, 11-2 and 11-0.

The 2022 tournament is expected to feature in excess of 100 athletes competing from the U11-U19 categories. The event will continue with the individual championships today and will conclude tomorrow. The team championships will start on Wednesday, following the official opening ceremony of the tournament.

beforethe actal final which is penciled in for Saturday. The sponsors of the competition include the Guyana Olympic Association, MVP Sports, John Fernandes Ltd, Bounty Farms, Digicel, E-Networks, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
