Policeman pelted in eye with brick, Anna Catherina man to be charged

Lance Corporal 21013 Edmondson was on Saturday pelted in his eye during an interception attempt and an Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) man is to be charged.

In a statement yesterday, Commander for Regional Division #3, Assistant Commissioner  Mahendra Siwnarine said  his ranks are investigating a report of the wounding of Edmondson who is stationed at the Dem Amstel Police Station.

The incident occurred on Saturday at about 6.15 pm at Anna Catherina.

According to the police, Edmondson was on traffic patrol duty in the vicinity of Anna Catherina with a Force motor cycle when he observed a white canter #GDD 5340, driven by Daniel Singh called ‘Anand’, a labourer,  acting in a suspicious manner.

As a result, he stopped the canter and ask the driver to produce his licence and other relevant documents. The driver drove away and Edmondson  chased behind him and apprehended him at his residence in Anna Catherina. There, the police said that the driver’s father and sister allegedly held onto Edmondson and the canter driver picked up a piece of brick and threw it at Edmondson hitting him in his right eye.

They then went into their house and locked it up. The police said that Edmondson was then taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by the ranks of the Police Anti-Crime Patrol  where he was examined by a doctor on duty and was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He later went to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital where a CT scan was done and he was admitted as a patient in the male surgical ward.

The suspect was later arrested and the canter was taken to the  Leonora Police Station by Traffic Lance Corporal Gaul and lodged. The suspect is slated to be charged this week.
