(Trinidad Guardian) An El Socorro, San Juan businessman who shot and killed two bandits and injured a third during a home invasion yesterday, is not expected to face any consequences after he discharged his licensed firearm during the incident, according to senior police.
According to investigators, the owner, who operates a dry goods business at Don Miguel Extension Road, was asleep around 4 am when he heard a loud banging on the front gate.
Upon checking his security cameras, the businessman told police he saw six men attempting to enter the property, which is heavily fortified.
He alerted the police and went to check on his 88-year-old father, who was also asleep.
Fearful for their lives, the businessman said he shot at the men, hitting three, while the others fled in a waiting vehicle.
Officers of the Barataria Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Inter-Agency Task Force, who were on patrol at the time, responded and apprehended a third suspect who is from the Santa Cruz district.
The vehicle used in the incident was also seized by those officers.
The injured suspect was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where he was treated and remains in a stable condition under police guard.
Meanwhile, another suspect, aged 30, of Bourg Mulatresse, was later detained at his home.
When Guardian Media visited the business place yesterday, those present declined to speak about the incident.
A senior officer said the businessman acted within the law when he discharged his personal firearm.
“Fear of your life being in danger, you can discharge your firearm and he acted within the law,” the senior cop said.
Officers are yet to release the names of the dead suspects.
