Julian Dow of Lot 63, Perth Village,  East Coast Demerara (ECD), was last Thursday freed of the charge of possession of a firearm and ammunition after a city Magistrate upheld a no-case submission made by his attorney, Eusi Anderson.

The prosecution’s case was that police officers caught Dow in a downtown Georgetown hotel room, with a haversack strapped to his shoulders, containing a gun and a quantity of ammunition.

However, Dow had maintained his innocence saying that the entire incident was all a setup. During court arguments on Thursday, Dow’s attorney, Anderson, posited to the court that nothing of evidential value was found linking his client to the haversack; no fingerprints, no personal belongings and no DNA samples were found.

Magistrate Annette Singh later upheld Anderson’s no-case submission and ruled that Dow be freed.

In August 2021, Dow appeared before Senior Magistrate, Leron Daly, where it was alleged that on August 18, at Hincks Street, Georgetown, he  had in his possession a Bryco .380 pistol, and five live .380 rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence. He had pleaded not guilty to both charges. The Guyana Police Force had reported that Dow was arrested after police visited the CJ Hotel, located at 21-22 Hincks Street, Lacytown, and conducted a search. The weapon, according to police, was found in a black single-strap bag that Dow was carrying.
