Cricket, the most recognized sport in Guyana and the fastest growing sport locally, golf will come together under the auspices of the Everest Cricket Club and the Guyana Golf Association/Nexgen Golf Academy with a strong commitment from the leaders of both entities to join forces to cross promote the sports.

Speaker of the House and President of Everest Cricket Club Hon. Manzoor Nadir accepted a donation of cricket bats, helmets and souvenirs from Aleem Hussain, President of the GGA/Nexgen Golf Academy on Wednesday in the presence of EU Ambassador Fernando Ponz Canto, National Security Advisor Gerry Gouveia, Deputy Speaker of the House, Lenox Shuman, Ceo GoInvest Peter Ramsaroop and GCCI’s Gerry Gouveia Jr.

“We welcome this partnership as it will allow youngsters from all over the country the opportunity to participate in both sports, which share similar traits  -focus, concentration and discipline, a lot of cricket greats are top golfers as well,” said Manzoor. “Aleem and I grew up a few corners away from each other in Albouystown and we both know how sports can impact lives of youngsters.”

The joint venture includes Honorary Membership being extended to both presidents in each other’s organizations, a commitment to share and maintain ground facilities, joint training programmes, and provision of equipment and coaches for the programme.  According to Hussain “Working together with the Honorable Speaker has been an amazing experience and with his vision and energy behind this programme, we are looking forward to great success. We see a perfect fit between the sports and share similar vision so this will grow quickly and immediately impact close to 1,000 kids.”

Golf has quickly risen to become a new favorite sport especially amongst women and children with Guyanese students taking golf at the CSEC examinations for the first time in our country’s history. The government of Guyana has recognized the demand and several golf facilities are now planned in Silica City and other areas in the near future.
