Suspect in murder of Charlestown mason surrenders

Alex Nedd, the prime suspect in the murder of 33-year-old Rodwell Phillips has surrendered to the police.

In a press statement issued yesterday afternoon, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that Nedd was taken to the Ruimveldt police station yesterday by his attorney.

“He (Nedd) was told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested.

He gave a written statement in the presence of his attorney admitting to the offence and is presently in custody,” the police said.

Philips, also known as ‘Fishie,’ 33 was found hacked to death in the wee hours of Monday. His body was found lying along the La Penitence Public Road with multiple chop wounds.

An autopsy yesterday showed that Phillips of Broad Street, Charlestown died as a result of a stab wound to his heart.

The police on Tuesday issued a wanted bulletin for Nedd.

Enquiries revealed that the murder occurred between 00:30hrs and 01:00hrs on Monday.

When investigators visited the scene, the suspected murder weapon — a cutlass — was seen beside Phillips body.

Philips’ corpse had one chop wound to the centre of the chest, one chop wound to the right side of the face, one chop wound to the left side of the back and one chop wound to the left foot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the Central Fire Station.
