Aubrey Norton let the African community’s spirit of hospitality down

Dear Editor,

Mr. Norton did a tremendous disservice to the African community, all the moreso when they were hosting their celebratory Emancipation Day. Whether the President of Guyana was invited or not, Mr. Norton, if he did not know better, should have been advised that the least he could do as host was to offer the warmest welcome to all guests – as equals. His refusal to shake the hands of the guest President was hardly representative of the large spirit of warm hospitality for which the African community has been identified for generations. Aubrey Norton let that spirit down to shriveled proportions. My grandparents and parents would have been embarrassed, like their progeny. Neither Burnham nor Hoyte would have conceded such self-miniaturisation.

Sincerely,
