Dredging of the Pomeroon River is being done at the right time

Dear Editor

I am a frequent reader of the Stabroek newspaper which I have great respect for because of its professionalism and I was happy to come across an article, of which its contents I believe is long overdue. The dredging of the magnificent Pomeroon River is finally underway. I hope most of that river would be desilted. It is a beautiful river and I believe it is one of Guyana’s deepest and longest.

Editor, the people of the Pomeroon River needs this operation since their livelihood solely depends on it. Ever since, as a reporter, I recalled on many occasions, especially at the Regional Democratic Council statutory meetings, Councillors, especially from the Pomeroon River, would raise the issue of overlapping of the Pomeroon River and clogged up canals which resulted in massive flooding of their farmlands and their homes. Editor, the problem of flooding was and still is a serious one for the people of the Pomeroon River and I am confident with the desilting of that river, some relief would be welcomed.

The Pomeroon River was once labeled as the bread basket of the Caribbean. We can get back to that place with the cooperation of a caring government and the cooperation of our citizens. The water is so important, it is still used for cooking, washing and cleaning. We need to take better care of our waters. The dredging of the Pomeroon River has finally come at a right time.

Sincerely,

Yannason Duncan
