Canefield estate worker dies in suspected pump station drowning

A Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice estate worker lost his life during the wee hours of Friday morning after he reportedly fell into the pump station where he was working aback the Rose Hall Estate.

Dead is Aangraj Kumar Indrapal, also known as ‘Charles,’ 59, of Lot 940 New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice.

His daughter, Roshnie Indrapal, 28, explained that the man left for work at 16:00 hrs on Thursday afternoon.

According to her, the deceased was not supposed to work but filled in for someone after he was asked to do so.

Stabroek News was told that the pump operator and Indrapal, the service (grill) person were stationed at the Number 3 Pump Station located at the rear of the estate.

“We get call around 7 [hrs yesterday] that them na find him. His bag, his boots was in the work place but he was not finding so when we get the call we go there,” his daughter related.

Roshnie said workers at the estate launched a search and a few hours after, around 09:00 hrs, her father’s body was discovered floating in the vicinity of the pump station. “His body did already start to swell up”, she relayed.

Meanwhile, a source told this newspaper that Indrapal’s workmate has related to authorities that the deceased exited the pump station around 03:00 hrs yesterday to relieved himself outside. His failure to return hours led to the subsequent launching of the search.

Up to yesterday afternoon police were still questioning the workmate as part of their investigation of the man’s death. His daughter related that a post-mortem examination is likely to be done in the coming week.

Indrapal is survived by his wife and two daughters. He was well known as a helpful person to his community.

The emotional Roshnie yesterday noted that the man enjoyed working at the estate, where he had been employed for most of his adult life.
