An electrician is now a remanded prisoner after he allegedly stole a gun from a security guard during a robbery at a city supermarket.

Joshua Thomas, 27, of Block ‘E’, Sophia, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown, where the charge was read to him.

The charge states that Thomas, on July 31, at A-Wen-9 Chinese Supermarket at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, while in the company of another, robbed Christopher Hintzel of a 12-gauge shotgun and six rounds of ammunition, valued at $225,000 and the property of Bhojeshwarie Mohan.

Thomas was not required to enter a plea to the charge.

According to the police’s case against him, on the day in question, at about 20:30hrs, Hintzel was on duty while being armed with a shotgun and 6 live cartridges at the supermarket.

Suddenly, two males, who were both wearing face masks, approached Hintzel and one of them braced an object on him and told him not to move, while the second suspect attempted to relieve the man of his service shotgun.

After a few attempts, they managed to take away the gun from the security guard, who then ran west along Aubrey Barker Road, while the two suspects fled on two motorcycles.

After more than a week, and acting on information received, investigators managed to contact one of the accused last Wednesday and summoned him to the Alberttown Police Station.

At the station, it was said that an interview was conducted and the accused co-operated with the investigators and admitted orally to committing the robbery.

The accused then took the officers to a ballfield at Plum Park, Sophia, where the stolen shotgun was recovered.

The accused was then told of the offence, cautioned, arrested and placed into custody.

Thomas’s attorney, Madan Kissoon, asked the court for reasonable bail. However, bail was denied and the man was remanded to prison until September 9, 2022, when the matter will be called again.
