Does the NDC have the mandate to lease a canal?

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank Stabroek News for highlighting our issue (letter dated 24th July 2022) with the Eccles/Ramsburg NDC regarding our western drainage canal and reserve.

In your follow-up article on August 1st 2022, Unicom has denied any filling up of the canal. Fortunately for us we have it on video.

We also have drone pics and a video showing the considerable narrowing of the canal which I am sending you.

On August 2nd 2022, myself and the secretary of our neighbourhood association attended the NDC statutory meeting and met with the chairman and councillors. The chairman, Anand Kalladeen is now telling us that the said canal was leased out in 2012 by the then Chairman who is now deceased. Does the NDC have the mandate to lease a canal? For what purpose would anyone lease a canal? Quite a tall tale in my opinion.

The NDCs in this country seem to be operating as if they are not answerable to anyone, not to the Ministry of Local Government nor to the taxpayers.

May the rights of the people and the truth prevail.

Sincerely,

Kamini Bulkan
