Armed bandits storm Industry supermarket, escape with cash

Police in Region 4C are on the hunt for four armed bandits who stormed an Industry, East Coast Demerara (ECD) supermarket on Wednesday night and carted off an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robbery occurred around 20.00hrs at Wan Li Supermarket. The supermarket is owned and operated by a 28-year-old businesswoman.

Reports are that the victim was about to close her business when she was confronted by the bandits who were all wearing skull hats and face masks. They arrived at the scene on two motorcycles, registration numbers unknown.

According to a police report, the two pillion riders entered the supermarket where they held the victim at gunpoint.

“The two pillion riders rushed into the supermarket pointing handguns to the victim and started to ransack the cashier area,” the police said.

At the time, a 37-year-old male drove up to the supermarket to make a purchase and he was confronted by one of the suspects who pointed his handgun at him and demanded that he hand over his valuables

The man became fearful for his life and drove off at a fast rate and collided with a fence after which one of the suspects fired two shots in his direction, the police said.

The two robbers then exited the supermarket with the cash and fled on the motorcycles heading east along the street towards Ogle Access Road.

No injuries were reported.

The incident was captured on CCTV camera.
