Police officer in custody over death of motorcyclist

An officer of the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) of the Guyana Police Force has been placed in custody after allegedly causing the death of a motorcyclist.

The accident which occurred last Sunday at about 17.50 hours on the Access Road of the Berbice River Bridge, involved motorcar PPP 2020 which was driven by the TSU officer, 32-year-old Sergeant Quacy Rose and a motorcycle, CL 6820, owned and ridden by 43-year-old Aubrey Sears of Lot 298 Number 9 Village, West Coast Berbice.

According to a police statement, their enquiries revealed that motorcar PPP 2020 was proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a fast rate, when it was alleged by the driver of the motorcar that Sears, who was proceeding west along the southern drive lane also at a fast rate, rode into his path and collided with the front right side of his vehicle.

As a result of the collision, Sears fell onto  Rose’s car’s bonnet, then onto the front windscreen and onto the road surface, finally ending up on the southern grass parapet, with injuries about his body.

The injured man was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited persons and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was examined and pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was subsequently taken to the Arokium Funeral Parlour where it currently awaits a post-mortem examination.

The release also informed that a Breathalyzer test was conducted on Rose which showed no evidence of alcohol in his system.

A notice of prosecution has since been served on Rose who remains in custody assisting with further investigations.
