(Trinidad Guardian) Several people scampered for their lives as gunmen stormed a Claxton Bay bar on Saturday night, murdering expectant father Kyron Marcano and injuring others. Marcano was one of four people killed on Saturday night.
Marcano, 28, of St John’s Road, Claxton Bay, died within minutes of gunmen shooting him several times as he hung out at the Club Classic along Hermitage Road, Union Village. Police said another woman from the area suffered gunshot wounds and was stable at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Surveillance footage showed patrons liming outside the bar around 10 pm when two men wearing hoodies ran into the bar. Armed with a handgun and rifle, the gunmen began shooting at Marcano as he sat around a table with others. Patrons inside and outside the bar ran out.
The gunmen retreated, but the one with the rifle returned and fired at least 10 more shots at Marcano as he lay on the ground bleeding.
St Margaret’s police responded and launched a search for the gunmen but were unsuccessful in finding them up to yesterday.
Relatives, friends and family gathered at Marcano’s home yesterday, confused about his death.
After seeing the footage of the murder, Marcano’s younger brother Kerdel believed it was an execution. However, Kerdel could not say what his brother did to deserve such a horrid faith. He said Marcano usually walked away from conflict.
“Usually, he is a man who does not be in anything. He does not be in any bacchanal. He and nobody were in any war.”
Given that his brother went to the bar to lime, Kerdel said Marcano did not fear that anyone would try to kill him. If anyone threatened them, Marcano would have said so.
Marcano would have turned 28 on September 25 and his wife was pregnant with his second child. He and Kerdel ran a transport service business.
Kerdel recalled reaching home around 9 pm after picking up his girlfriend.
He remembered seeing Marcano home before he left but did not think anything of him not being home. He thought Marcano went to check on a friend. But as it got later, he began to wonder why Marcano had not returned him.
“I just sat in the kitchen, now take out some food and warm it in the microwave. I just took one spoonful of the food when somebody came calling outside. The way the person called, I could tell something happened,” Kerdel said.
It was their neighbour.
“She said do not cry.”
Kerdel said she eventually broke the news that someone killed her brother at a bar less than a five-minute walk away. Kerdel immediately got into his vehicle and drove to the bar. However, those around told him his brother was on the way to the San Fernando General Hospital.
Reflecting on how his brother died, Kerdel said it was all features of the world today.
“Trinidad & Tobago, that is where we reach right now. Rifles and handguns are like socks and shoes on the road. Everybody has one. Everybody is wearing one.”
In an unrelated incident, two people were killed and three were injured while liming in Malick.
The victims were identified as Kunta Andrews, 39, of Barataria and Anthony Sarjeant, 59, of Malick. The surviving victims of the gun attack are two men and a woman, all of Sixth Avenue in Barataria.
Police said around 5.40 pm, the group was liming at the corner of 6th Avenue and 10th Street, when a car pulled up and its occupants opened fire. The gunmen then sped off.
In another incident around 8.25 pm, Bevon Grant, 23, of Maloney, was fatally shot when he was confronted by a lone gunman who came out of a car. Police said he was shot several times and subsequently taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations are continuing into both incidents.
