Guyana men’s team went down to arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago 1-4 in their opening match of the 16th  Central and American (CAC) Games hockey tournament which started yesterday in the Dominican Republic.

It was a tough opening assignment for the Guyana squad in their Pool B fixture as  Trinidad and Tobago striker Teague Marcano netted a hat-trick of goals. The defeat has put the Guyanese in a must-win situation in their next match against the Dominican Republic if they are to stay in contention in the group.

Guyana kept their opponents at bay in the first quarter before Marcano netted the first of his three goals in the 15th minute from a penalty corner. Four minutes later Jovan Wren scored for the Trinidadians to give them a 2-0 lead at half-time. Marcano scored again in the 31st minute from another penalty corner. However, Guyana pulled one back when Andrew Stewart scored in the 36th minute from a penalty corner also.

Marcano scored with a field goal in the 41st minute as the Trinidadians completed a 4-1 victory.

Guyana will be in action again tomorrow when they square off with minnows the Dominican Republic at 10:00 hours before they collide with powerhouse Cuba in their final Pool match on Sunday.

The hockey squad is part of a large Guyana contingent at the Games being hosted jointly by the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.
