Guyana’s Ezekiel Newton took his talents to São Paulo, Brazil, and ran off with a silver medal in the boys 200m event at the South American U-18 Championships.

Newton clocked a personal best 21.45s in the half lap event on Saturday to climb the podium steps.  Newton, accompanied by Coach Johnny Gravesande, competed in  the 100 and 200m.

Entering the event with a time of 10.55s earned at the National Youth and Junior Championships at Leonora, Newton placed third in his heat with a time 10.70s.

This earned him a place in the final where he showed signs of being nervous.

What may have further complicated matters was the fact that the blue riband event had to be restarted three times due to a start system failure and once due to an error by a technical official.

Though he ran 10.61s, it was only good enough for fourth place. However, with a personal best on international soil, Newton is bouyed by his achievement.
