A vegetable vendor was struck down and killed on Thursday evening on the Adventure Public Road, Region Two, by a speeding driver, who fled the scene.

Dead is Ameer Ali, 63, popularly known as “Greens Boy,” of Adven-ture Village.

The accident occurred around 18:20 hrs.

According to information reaching Stabroek News, Ali was walking on the public road when a hire car, HD 2994, struck him. The driver of the taxi was said to be speeding and also under the influence at the time of the accident.

After the accident the driver reportedly fled the scene but the police managed to apprehend him on Friday morning.

Both the driver and his vehicle are currently in police custody. 

According to a relative, Ali had just finished dinner and was going to meet a friend when the accident occurred. He suffered head injuries and a broken left leg. 

He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ali was a well-known vendor around the Annan-dale Riverstown Neighbor-hood Democratic Council (NDC). 

He would buy vegetables from farmers and resell them. He was living alone at the time of his death.

“He never married. He was living alone… He was a good man never trouble anyone. His death was so sudden but we hope justice serve,” a relative related.

Ali’s body is currently at the Suddie Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The driver is currently in police custody.
