Ganesh Choonilall, the driver who allegedly struck down 63-year-old Ameer Ali, known as ‘Greens Boy’, along the Adventure Public Road on the Essequibo Coast and then fled, was on Monday remanded to prison on two charges.

The 35-year-old hire car driver, of Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast, was slapped with two charges when he appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

Choonilall pleaded not guilty to the charges of failure to stop at an accident scene and failure to render assistance to the victim.

Bail was refused and the defendant was remanded to prison. The man will make his next court appearance on September 23.

The police, in a statement, had said that the accident which claimed the life of Ali occurred last Thursday at about 19:30hrs along the Adventure Public Road.

Enquiries had revealed that motorcar PWW 2293, which was being driven by Choonilall, was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate, while the now deceased Ali was walking at the corner of the road when he was struck by the car.

As a result of the impact, Ali fell on the road. He was then picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After hitting the now dead man, the Choonilall drove away but he was eventually apprehended and placed in custody by police officers.
