A retired Guyana Police Force (GPF) officer has been charged with the abduction of Mahaica businessman Jagdesh Mangal, who was assaulted and robbed by three men who claimed that they were owed money.

Kenneth Bahadur, 55, of Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD), yesterday appeared in the Georgetown court of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, who read the charge to him.

The father of four was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which states that on September 12, at Station Street, Kitty, he abducted Mangal, 35, with intent to secretly confine him.

As Prosecutor Christopher Morris objected to bail on the grounds that the two other suspects are on the run and that the defendant has the ability to tamper with the witnesses, Bahadur’s attorney, Patrice Henry, argued that his client is not a flight risk.

Magistrate Daly eventually granted Bahadur bail in the sum of $200,000, along with condition that he report to the Kitty Police Station every Monday until the conclusion of the matter.

The case was then adjourned until October 7.

A statement from the police had previously stated that Mangal, of Belmont, Mahaica, ECD, was at a popular bar located at Station Street, Kitty when two men, along with the retired cop showed up in a vehicle, exited the same, approached the man and started punching him about his body, while telling him (Mangal) that they want their money.

It was reported that Bahadur told his two accomplice to take the man away, which led to them forcing Mangal in the back seat of the vehicle.

The police had also said that after the matter was reported, the investigator who visited the bar was told by the owner that although she called on Bahadur to help stop Mangal from being assaulted, he refused.
