A Perseverance, Essequibo man was arrested on Wednesday at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, after he was linked to birds hidden in hair curlers in luggage.

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) said the curlers were found in luggage that Dhanraj Deochand had checked in for Unique Sunshine London, who was arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine hidden in Sunshine biscuit wrappers on a flight bound for the United States.

In a Facebook post, CANU said as its officers were investigating London, they discovered Deochand, also a passenger bound for the United States, attempting to smuggle six finches concealed in hair rollers.

It is unlawful to export the birds without the authorisation of the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission or another competent authority.

In recent years, several persons have been caught trying to smuggle birds hidden in hair curlers, either prior to embarking flights at the Cheddi Jagan Airport, or after arrival in the United States at the JFK Airport.
