Joint Services destroy 3,000 pounds of ganja found at DeVeldt camp

A Joint Services operation in the Berbice River on Saturday has  led to the destruction of approximately 3,000 pounds of marijuana at a camp in DeVeldt.

Three men and a juvenile have also been arrested and taken into police custody in connection with the discovery of the cannabis.

The men are Fabian Atkinson, 30, of Santa Rosa Mission, North West District; Terrence John, 24, of New Amsterdam, Berbice; and Elboy Anastacio, 20, of Grove, East Bank Demerara.

The camp set on fire

The Guyana Police Force on Sunday said that during a more than 12-hour-long operation the Joint Services team discovered 15,000 cannabis plants ranging from ten inches to seven feet and amounting to approximately 2,000 pounds on a total of approximately six acres of land. An additional 1,000 pounds of dried cannabis were also found on the camp.

When ranks entered the camp, they discovered three adult males along with a juvenile attending to the plants on the farms.

On seeing the police, they reportedly ran in an attempt to escape. However, police gave chase and managed to apprehend them.

Subsequently a search was conducted on John’s bag, which was in a make-shift camp and an A03 Samsung Cellular phone and a Guyana National ID card were found.

The camp, drying areas, processed cannabis, and cannabis plants were all destroyed by fire.

The three adult males and the juvenile were escorted to Central Police Station along with six twelve-gauge cartridges that were found, a spray can, a water can, a brush cutter, and cannabis plants.

At the station the detainees were placed in custody pending charges.
