A city constable was stabbed to death yesterday morning after he attacked a man who was trying to stop him from harassing his sister-in-law.
The deceased, Lester Sobers, 25, of 510 Block ‘X’ A Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, and a father of one was fatally stabbed on Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of the Cevons Waste Management Corporate Headquarters.
The stabbing occurred at approximately 00.45 hrs yesterday.
According to information gathered from the police, Sobers was engaged in a heated misunderstanding with Sabrina Joseph, 22, with whom he shares a child.
The misunderstanding began at her ‘B’ Field, Sophia home after Joseph indicated that she wanted to visit her sister’s business place on Mandela Avenue.
Police said shortly after Joseph arrived at her sister’s business, Sobers followed behind and began to verbally abuse her. While verbally abusing her, police said, he made threats to end her life.
Frustrated by the ordeal, Joseph went to the East La Penitence Police Station and made a report against Sobers. However, when police escorted her back to her sister’s business place, ranks made checks for Sobers but he could not be located in the area.
However, shortly after the police left, Sobers returned and was armed with a cutlass. For a second time, he launched a verbal attack on Joseph.
Joseph’s brother-in-law, who was present at the time, told Sobers to desist from threatening the woman.
The police said at this point Sobers left but returned minutes later with his brother and he began to abuse not only Joseph but her sister and brother-in-law.
The brother-in-law pleaded with the men to desist from their actions and ordered them off their business premises but they refused.
While pleading with Sobers and his brother, police said, Sobers, armed with a cutlass, fired a blow aimed at the brother-in-law. He was hit to the side of his head and this resulted in a scuffle.
During the scuffle, the police said the brother-in-law, who was armed with a knife, stabbed Sobers to the left side of his chest. The deceased immediately fell to the ground motionless and was seen bleeding profusely.
The emergency medical technicians responded after being summoned but Sobers was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect along with Sobers’ brother are currently in police custody assisting police with the investigation. The weapon used in the stabbing along with the cutlass that was in Sobers’ possession were retrieved from the scene.
