A father of six was killed on Monday night after a truck knocked him off his electric bike and drove over his head along Mandela Avenue, in Georgetown.

At the time, the deceased Hawatt Green, 45, of 15 Durban Backlands, was on a trip to buy food and ice cream for his children.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement, Green was riding his bike south along Mandela Avenue when he was hit.

The accident occurred around 21:25 hrs, as both the truck, GZZ 850, driven by Trinidad national Fazal Mohammed, and Green were proceeding south along Mandela Avenue. Green was said to be in in the pedal cycle lane ahead of the truck.

The police said as the truck driver attempted to drive by Green, the left wheel of the vehicle collided with the cyclist, causing him to fall onto the road surface, and the wheel then drove over his head, crushing him.

The truck driver continued on further south before eventually being stopped by another driver, who informed him that he had collided with Green. The driver of the truck was subsequently arrested by the police.

An emergency ambulance from the Central Fire Station was summoned with EMT personnel, who pronounced Green dead on the scene at 21:42 hrs. His body was formally identified by his relatives and was escorted to the Memorial Funeral Home where it is presently awaiting post mortem examination.

In an interview with Stabroek News yesterday, the dead’s man former partner, Omabella Jones, stated that Green had told his young son that he was going to buy food and ice cream for them before leaving.  They shared four children and Green was also father to two step children.

Jones was unclear about how the man met his demise but said her eight-year-old son told her a truck ran over his father and his brains had been scattered all over the place. She added that she went to the scene of the accident and saw the man’s body on the ground, covered, and his bike in a corner.

Jones said Green was a good father and always took care of his children. He worked as an electrician at the Total Store on Regent Street.

At the time she spoke with this newspaper Jones said the police were supposed to call her as they did not say what would happen to the suspect.

The police statement said Notice of intended Prosecution was served on Mohammed. It added that a breathalyser test was conducted on him but found no trace of alcohol in his breath. He remained in police custody up to yesterday.
