Father, son in custody over fatal stabbing of Canal man

A father and his teenaged son are now in custody following the fatal stabbing of a 29-year-old Canal No. 1 resident on Saturday night.

The deceased, Deonarine Ramachandran of Conservancy Dam, Canal #1 Polder, West Bank Demerara was stabbed in his abdomen during a scuffle with the duo.  Police said the murder occurred at around 10.30 pm on Saturday.

Police in a statement yesterday said Ramachandran and the 17-year-old suspect were consuming alcohol at the home of the former.

During the course of the drinking spree, investigations revealed that the teen suspect became intoxicated and began to behave in a disorderly manner. At this time, he was armed with a knife.

The Police said that Ramachandran intervened, took away the knife and dealt the accused several slaps in an effort to “calm him down.”

Ramachandran’s approach however angered the suspect, resulting in the suspect leaving the now- deceased’s premises in a furious manner and making threats and using expletives. Minutes later, the suspect returned with a cutlass to Ramachandran’s home. According to the police report, upon seeing this, Ramachandran also armed himself with a cutlass, approached the teenager and attempted to chop him but failed.

The 17-year-old suspect then ran away on the Conservancy Dam where he continued to issue expletives and threats directed towards Ramachandran.

Annoyed by the 17-year-old’s behaviour, Ramachandran confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, the teenager ran away and went home.  Subsequently the suspect’s  58-year-old father got involved and a scuffle then ensued between him and Ramachandran.  It was in the midst of this scuffle that the 17-year-old suspect armed himself with a knife and dealt Ramachandran a stab in his abdomen.

Ramachandran was picked up by relatives and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died whilst receiving treatment.

The body is presently at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
