Enmore businessman held over uncustomed goods

Police on Wednesday arrested an Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) businessman who was allegedly found in possession of a quantity of uncustomed goods after breaching a roadblock.

In a press release issued yesterday, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said a party of ranks attached to the Mahaica Police station were conducting a roadblock in the vicinity of Unity Junction, ECD during which vehicles were stopped and searched. The police said motor van bearing registration number GLL 987 which was driven by the 31-year-old businessman of Logwood, Enmore, ECD breached the roadblock and sped away.

As a result, ranks pursued the motor van which was intercepted at Logwood, Enmore.

A search was conducted in the vehicle during which a quantity of uncustomed goods were found in black plastic bags.

The items which were seized included 660 packs of Zenden brand mosquito coil, 3 boxes of Atlanta cigarettes containing 150 cartons and two boxes of Red Oris cigarettes containing 100 cartons.

The police said the businessman produced a valid driver’s licence for a motorcar and not a motor van.

All the other documents for the motor van were also produced. However, they were all expired, the police added.

The businessman along with the van of uncustomed goods were escorted to the Enmore Police Station where the items were lodged.

The businessman was placed in police custody as the investigation continues.

The Guyana Revenue Authority was informed, the police said.
