Suspect in Enmore robbery confesses

One of the five men who were captured by the police on Monday afternoon after robbing a Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) grocer has confessed to the crime and six  similar matters and is expected to be charged today.

The Guyana Police Force in a press release last evening said that ranks from the ‘C’ Division were able to solve a number of serious crimes committed recently following the apprehension of the serial bandit.

The police said apart from giving a confession in relation to the Enmore robbery he has also admitted to being a part of a gang who committed a series of armed robberies on the ECD in recent times.

“The suspect was positively identified during several identification parades conducted yesterday in relation to six recent armed robberies”, the police said.

He is scheduled to appear in court today where he will face a total of nine charges: six counts of robbery under arms, two counts of discharging a loaded firearm with intent, and one count each of possession of arms and ammunition without a licence.

In a separate release issued on Tuesday, the police said investigations into the robbery at Enmore revealed that the grocer was in his home when he was confronted by four masked men, all armed with firearms, who assaulted him and demanded cash and jewellery. According to the release, the men carted off a quantity of valuables inclusive of a licensed handgun with fifteen rounds of ammunition and made good their escape from the premises after which they hijacked a motor car and proceeded in the vicinity of Bare Root.

“They were then observed by ranks of two police patrols acting in a suspicious manner and upon realizing that they had attracted the attention of the police, they opened fire on the patrols, abandoned the motor car and fled to the backlands of Bare Root”, the police said.

They were pursued and one suspect was arrested with an unlicensed pistol and twelve matching rounds, whilst the remainder managed to escape.

A number of live rounds and spent shells were also found in the stolen motor car which was impounded at the Cove and John Police station.
