Melanie man, 20, pleads guilty to seven counts of armed robbery

Matthew Sylvain, a 20-year-old labourer of Lot 14 North Melanie, East Coast Demerara, appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court #1 and #2 on seven charges of armed robbery and pleaded guilty to all.

He was jailed for two years each on two of them and has to return to court for sentencing on the other five, according to a statement from the police.

The statement said that Sylvain is accused of committing the armed robberies on:

1. Delon McBeth, on 21st February 2024, at EBD

2. Wei Zu Chen (Chinese National), on 22nd February 2024, at Enmore, ECD

3. Shantie Mohan, on 22nd February 2024, at Enmore, ECD

4. Damian Simon, on 27th February 2024, at Triumph

5. Stephen Gopaul, on 27th February 2024, at Triumph

The defendant appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus where five of the seven charges were read. The defendant pleaded guilty to all five charges and was remanded to prison, pending probation and conviction reports. All of the matters were adjourned to Friday 15th March 2024 for report and sentencing.

It should be noted that the defendant also appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly where two counts of robbery under arms were read to him.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years imprisonment on each.
