Something is seriously wrong with the road engineering establishment in Guyana which has accepted the mechanisms for pedestrian crossings on Sheriff Mandela. ‘Request’ crossing buttons are common features for traffic lights at many busy crossings. They are usually placed conveniently for pedestrians, especially those who have disabilities. The road engineering authorities in Guyana apparently thought that putting the walk request behind barriers at Campbell Avenue /Sheriff Street junction and on a muddy mound at the Seawall/Sheriff junction was convenient. We understand that the senior road engineers probably do not walk on the roads and do not have to use the pedestrian crossings so they probably checked a box on the contract to get through it. There is no indication that these would be fixed.
