Guyana and Suriname shared golf honours in 1998

Guyana and Suriname golfers shared the honours in the 1998 two-day LSG golf classic at the Lusignan course with Guyanese Vijay Deo and Basil Sookram showing top form among the men and Surinamese Lillian Hermelijn along with Guyanese Joan Fields winning convincingly in the women’s category.

Pre- tournament favorite Vijay Deo narrowly lost to Basil Sookram in the men’s championship   category, with both players scoring a total of 60 points but Sookram came out victorious after having a better second day score. Vijay Deo nipped past A. Moenoe of Suriname and Maurice Solomon in the Net Category with all three competitors ending on 69 points. In the men’s first flight the Guyanese headed the leaderboard with Andy Gouveia’s 41 points taking top honors from Patrick Prashad’s points and Basheer Khan’s 34 Points.

Maurice Solomon won the men’s second flight with 31 points beating into second position Surinamese Leslie Chee-A-Tow with 27 points and former West Indies Test Cricketer Joseph Solomon’s 26 points.

In the men’s senior category fortunes fluctuated between the gross and net categories with Guyana’s Dharamdeo Sawh’s 42 points winning followed by Irvin Hermelijn of Suriname with 40 points and Joe Solomon 35 points.

Joseph Solomon emerged winner of the net category with 68 points from Dharamdeo Sawh  and  Anand Dharry.

Lillian Hermelijn of Suriname captured the women’s senior’s gross category with 24 points followed by Joan Fields of Guyana with a gross of 16 points H. Wolterstoff of Suriname also had 16 points and was third. Joan Fields won the net division with 56 points with H.  Wolterstoff of Suriname second and Guyanese Norma  Clarke third. The overall best net on the first day was won by Maurice Solomon with 37 points while Vijay Deo took the honors on Day two.

This tournament also attracted golfers from Grenada.

The 1998 L.S.G Golf classic tournament was organized by Ronald Gordon former captain Lusignan Golf Club.
