More local chess competitions needed

Where are the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) over-the-board tournaments? Especially those for the seniors? In May of this year, the seniors and juniors, men and women, played the National Chess Championships side by side. This was used as a measuring tool for justifying the names of a 2022 Chess Olympiad team. It was a marvellous tournament.

The Olympiad came and promised a lot for our participants. Regrettably, the May competition was the last of the GCF’s over-the-board tournaments coming into the final quarter of the year. One would have imagined that with the lifting of the COVID regulations, we would have witnessed a full return of over-the-bonard tournaments. But that was not the case. However, there is still time to refresh chess before Christmas and catapult it into the new year by hosting a tournament.

Chess cannot survive without competition. Playing regular tournaments is competition. We look forward to more tournaments in the future.

Internationally, Fabiano Caruana is the new US Chess champion. He won the USA’s national chess championship last week by playing unbeaten. In the Women’s section Jennifer Yu is the new Women’s Champion. She defeated Irina Krush for the title in a playoff. On move nine in the game, Yu, a Harvard student, shockingly blundered a whole bishop. But her fighting spirit prevailed and she won the game, and with it, the US championship.

Additionally, Hans Niemann has sued world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. The complaint states that he is seeking “damages in an amount to be determined at trial but no less than [US] $100 million”, according to the publication Chess Base. Carlsen had accused Niemann of cheating at chess.
