Months after she was charged with attempting to smuggle a quantity of cocaine hidden in religious items, 23-year-old Lisa Ramnarine was yesterday granted $350,000 bail.

When the matter was called before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts, Ramnarine’s attorney, Bernard DaSilva renewed his application for bail.

Ramnarine was granted bail on the condition that she reports to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) twice weekly and lodges her passport.

The case was adjourned to February 1, 2023.

Ramnarine of Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was arrested in June this year after she allegedly tried to ship several items used in Hindu rituals containing 540 grams of cocaine via a DHL outlet.

In a press release, CANU had said ranks acting on information, intercepted the parcel at DHL’s 50 E Fifth Street, Alberttown headquarters.

The illegal drug was discovered in a hidden compartment within a havan kund, CANU had said.

An examination of the package led the officers to Ramnarine, who was listed as the sender.

Ramnarine was arrested and taken to CANU headquarters where the item was dismantled in her presence and the drug tested.

She was subsequently charged and remanded to prison.
