Suspect held over daring Superbet robbery on Corentyne

Police in Berbice have apprehended one of the suspects in last night’s daring armed robbery at Sewraj Superbet and Beer Garden on the Corentyne coast.

Commander of Regional Police Division #6, Senior Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus, said one suspect was captured around 01:10 hours this morning.

The robbery occurred about 20:15 hours on Monday, October 31, 2022, at Sewraj Superbet Shop at Farm, Corentyne.

The suspect, a 35-year-old farmer of East Canje, Berbice, was arrested by a party of policemen, and he remains in custody at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam assisting with the investigations.

The robbery occurred at the Sewraj Superbet and Beer Garden owned by 43-year-old Deochand Hemchand, called ‘Sewraj’, a businessman of Lot 11 Farm Corentyne, Berbice.

Police said that a number of persons were robbed:

 

*Muneshwar Ramkishun, a 33-year-old of Canefield, East Canje, Berbice was robbed of his gold chain worth $158,000; as well as the day’s sales of $290,000 in cash property of the Superbet Outlet.

*Permasawar Persaud, a 30-year-old mason of New Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice was robbed of $45,000 dollars.

*Sookdeo Kedarnauth, a 33-year-old hire car driver from No. 19 Village in Corentyne, Berbice, was relieved of his gold chain worth $180,000 dollars.

*Novashkar Sahadeo, a 27-year-old mechanic of Susannah Village, East Canje, Berbice, was robbed of his wallet containing a Driver’s Licence, Insurance, $200 United States dollars and documents.

The scene was visited at about 20:30 hours last night by a party of policemen.

Investigations so far have revealed that the robbery was committed by three men (two unidentifiable and one identifiable male) and they were armed with a small handgun and a hammer.

Ramkishun, who is employed at the Superbet Outlet, was confronted by the three suspects, who relieved him of $290,000 dollars (the sales for that day) along with his gold chain.

Sahadeo, Kedarnauth, Shawn Gobin, and Persaud were outside in close proximity of the Superbet Outlet consuming alcohol together when the suspects turn their attention to them and relieved them of the mentioned articles.

During the robbery, Sahadeo was injured after he was dealt one lash to his forehead with the gun by one of the suspects.

The suspects, after committing the brazen robbery, fled into the Backlands.

Sahadeo was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he received medical attention from a doctor on duty, was treated for his injury, and was sent away.

Investigations are ongoing.
