Sentencing was yesterday deferred for a young mother of one who admitted to stealing over $2.2 million in both foreign and Guyana dollars after she appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a Georgetown court.

It was alleged that on October 10, at Plum Park, 20-year-old Onicka Matthews stole Cdn $73,330, US$170 US, and Gy$160,550 from Bissoondai Raymond.

Asked by the Magistrate why she stole the money, the now remanded Matthews said that she had no particular reason. Magistrate Daly then ordered for a probation report to be prepared for the defendant and then fixed sentencing for November 17.

Meanwhile, Prosecutor Christopher Morris informed the court that the virtual complainant and the defendant live in the same yard but in different apartments. He said that on the day in question, Matthews sneaked into the elderly woman’s apartment and stole the money.

As a result, the matter was reported and the police visited the area and a few of Raymond’s neighbours related that they saw when the defendant entered the house. Matthews was then contacted and a search was carried out on her which led to the discovery of some of the money. After a further search, another quantity was found in her home.

During the court proceedings on Friday, Raymond started to weep while explaining that she was accumulating the money to travel abroad to attend her son’s wedding. She added “we sorry for this girl…she’s a clever thief,” while informing the court that Matthews had reportedly stolen from another individual who also lives in the same yard.
