Kaneville miner murdered at Sand Hill Backdam

Investigations are ongoing into the death of a 37 year-old miner of First Street, Kaneville Squatting area, East Bank Demerara, whose body was discovered at Sand Hill Backdam, Cuyuni River with injuries about his body.

According to a police report, the now deceased man, Ravindra Alfred, was alleged to be having an affair with the suspect’s fiancée, a Venezuelan national, for some time. The deceased’s mother, 61-year-old, Indra Singh, stated that on Sunday last, around 9 am, the suspect who also worked at their mining camp at Sand Hill Landing, had breakfast with them.

After the three of them had breakfast, Singh and her son left the camp and went to the backdam. The mother said that around 9 am on Monday her son had not returned from the backdam so she went in search of him. Alfred’s body was discovered at Sand Hill Backdam with injuries about his body by several workers. The matter was reported to the police.

When officers arrived on the scene, an examination of the body revealed a laceration to the left hand, a gaping wound to the left side of the head above the ear, and another to the face extending from over the top lip to the right eye, and to the right side cheek. The body was transported to the Bartica Regional hospital.

The search for the suspect and his fiancée have so far proven futile.
