Sherwin Sampson and Clivicia Spencer were the first cyclists to claim gold medals when action in the 60th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday morning.  The pair earned the spoils of the Open boys (40km) and girls (25km) road races staged on the outer circuit of the National Park.

Sampson of District 12, clocked a brisk 57:24s in his event despite the inclement weather.

The 16-year-old who attends the Campbellville Secondary School is displaying sublime form on the saddle and continues to grab the headlines and add to his palmares.

A day earlier, he won the gold medal for the boys road race event in the Inter Guiana Games.

In yesterday’s race, Sampson led District 11’s Alex Leung and District Six’s Mario Washington onto the podium.

Meanwhile, Spencer who has also been dominating the local cycling circuit, stopped the clock in 52m: 38.48s to easily win her event in excess of five minutes.  The District 10 standout led teammate, Savannah Hyles (57.56s) and District Six’s Suria Duncan (1:06.21s) into the top three.

Cycling action in this year’s ‘Nationals’ which returns from a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, continues this morning inside the National Park. (Emmerson Campbell)
