Dear Editor,
The arrest of Mayor Ubraj Narine for questioning President Ali’s motives for continuously refusing to engage with him “is it because I am a Hindu and he is a Muslim?” is a watershed moment in our nation’s history; the arrest places our freedom to question anyone in Government under siege.
Those of us who lived through the Burnham era know well the value of free speech and also how easily freedoms are eroded under a dictatorship. We also know the value of Voltaire’s maxim “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” I can only hope that good sense will prevail and the Guyana Police Force will be reined in and their over-zealous will to please the political masters curbed as a matter of great urgency.
