Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks currently working on the Kaieteur Airstrip Expansion Project have been commended by the Minister of Public Works for the job  they have done so far.

A release from the GDF said that the project which began in May 2022 is currently at the 30% completion point, with the assigned area fully cleared to allow for expansion. The release said that ranks are currently testing a more readily available explosive to hasten the completion of the blasting phase.

A team led by the Minister of Public Works,  Juan Edghill and Government Projects Engineer, Brigadier (ret’d) Gary Beaton and a team of Senior Officers took Christmas cheer to the ranks.

Edghill, in remarks to the ranks, applauded them for the work done thus far. He said he was impressed that most of the clearing was done manually by the soldiers.

Speaking to the military involvement in community development projects,  Edghill noted that the long-term benefits were obvious. He noted that a more community-oriented military would definitely result in increased interactions, which have already resulted in increased recruitment numbers.

The staff of the Kaieteur National Park also joined in the ‘Soldiers’ Day’ celebration, enjoying songs, skits, and poems followed by lunch served by the Minister and team.
