Moths continue to be major problem on Essequibo Coast

Dear Editor,

This is a request for your assistance to bring attention to the problematic moth situation on the Essequibo Coast and Pomeroon Area, Region 2.

As you are aware there was heavy infestation of moths along the environs of the Charity to Hampton Court villages of the Coast and also in the Pomeroon area as recently as a few weeks ago.

This infestation resulted in a public health crisis affecting residents from their normal course of life.

When the moth gets into contact with people it causes an allergic reaction to the skin resulting in severe irritation and discomfort. The dust or scales released from the moths causes this reaction. Symptoms persist over a period of time and given the frequency of contact it is impossible to get relief. The moths are prevalent at nights and are attracted to lights.

Presently, there are heavy larva/caterpillar populations in various areas.

The seeming required course of action is the intervention from experts in pest control and environmental health at the governmental level since this cannot be undertaken on an individual basis. One cycle has passed without any intervention from the RDC or any other relevant authority.

Yours faithfully,
