The prestigious World Speed Chess Championship follows shortly after today’s Argentina vs France World Cup final. The Championship ends on December 20.

Speed chess encounters have become very popular and therefore the World Championship has become comparable to the traditional classical world championship.

American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura has advanced to the final, having won against Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin. Nakamura is a famous speed chess streamer who is considered the very best in the business. He outplayed world champion Magnus Carlsen in a speed chess competition recently. Today Nakamura faces the winner of the second semifinal: Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave or Carlsen.

Meanwhile, the FIDE Council has approved a major reform of the qualification paths to the Candidates Tournament, the event that decides the challenger for the World Championship match.
