A 31-year-old motorcyclist is in a serious condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was allegedly struck by a red motor vehicle along the East Canje Berbice Public Road on Saturday evening.

Alvin Ramnattan, 31, an employee of the Guyana Beverage Company at Palmyra and of Betsy Ground, East Canje, was reportedly struck around 8 pm while returning home from work on his motorcycle along the Cumberland Public Road.

According to information gathered, after Ramnattan was struck, residents assisted with removing him from underneath the car after which he was rushed to the hospital. The driver later fled the scene and went into hiding.

Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus yesterday afternoon confirmed that the suspected driver was in custody as the investigation into the matter is continuing.

The injured man’s uncle, Dhanraj Persaud yesterday explained that the family only became aware late Saturday evening through a video that was uploaded on social media showing Ramnattan’s body being removed from under the car.

He said they immediately started to gather information and later learned that his nephew was at the hospital. After visiting the institution, the man was informed that the driver allegedly dropped Ramnattan to the hospital and left.

The uncle then filed a police report after which an investigation was opened.
