Toddler dies in Unity crash

A six-month-old girl died and several others including her parents were injured after the car in which they were travelling was involved in an accident with another early yesterday morning along the Unity, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road.

Dead is Devine Khan of Lot 61 West Road, Sparendaam, ECD.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a statement yesterday confirmed the accident which occurred around 1.30 am.

At the time, the police said Devine and her father, Dequan Khan were passengers of motorcar, PNN 8403 which was being driven by Ackeem Jerricks.

However, information reaching Stabroek News revealed that the child’s mother, Taticka Lewis and her five-year-old sibling were also in the car. They too were injured.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the accident occurred after the driver of motorcar, PVV 2649, Davin Butts, 31 of Mahaicony, ECD allegedly slept away and lost control of his vehicle.

Enquiries, the police said, revealed that motor car, PNN 8403 was proceeding west along the southern lane of the public road when Butts, who was travelling east along the northern lane of the said road alleged that he fell asleep and lost control of his car

As a result, his motorcar collided with the front of motor car, PNN 8403.

Both drivers and the occupants were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Devine was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Davin Butts, who received injuries to his head, Ackeem Jerricks, who received injuries to his right leg, and Dequan Khan, who received injuries about his body are presently being treated at the said institution,” the police said.

Investigations are ongoing and both vehicles were lodged.
