Drivers arrested over Mahaica triple fatality will not be charged

The two drivers who were arrested over the fatal accident at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) last Saturday that claimed the lives of three persons, have been released from police custody and will not be charged.

The Police stated that on Friday, Keyon Stoute, driver of motorcar PAD 171, and Bhaupaul Bhawandas, driver of a lorry, were released from police custody.

Elijah Pellew, 21, of Lot 38 Unity; Mahaica, Raymond Rouse, 21, of Lot 57 Supply, Mahaica; and 19-year-old Shawn Persaud of Huntley, Mahaicony died  in the accident that occurred at about 22.04 hours on Saturday night at Unity Public Road, ECD. Pellew and Rouse were on a motorbike.

The accident involved a car, PGG 9823, owned and driven by Balram Thuknauth, 21, of Lot 9 Huntley Mahaicony, ECD. The other occupants were Persaud (now deceased) and Baskar Ramdeen, 19, of Lot 228 Back Street, Better Hope, ECD.

The other vehicles involved in the incident were a car, PAD 171, owned and driven by Stoute, 37, of Lot 69 Logwood, Enmore, ECD, and the lorry, owned and driven by Bhawandas, 51, of Lot 140 B Quamina Street, Georgetown.

Enquiries revealed that  PGG 9823 was proceeding east on the Unity Public Road while PAD 171 was proceeding in the opposite direction behind the lorry.

It was alleged by Stoute, the driver of car PAD 171, that the motorcycle with no lights undertook him and collided with the right side of  PGG 9823, causing that car to spin twice and into the path of his car.

Stoute pulled left to avoid a collision and ended up in the southern parapet. As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist and pillion rider were flung off the motorcycle, colliding with the right side of the lorry, and falling onto the roadway, receiving injuries to their bodies.

Meanwhile, the passenger in the front seat of  PGG 9823, Persaud, was pinned down, and the other passenger in the rear seat suffered injuries about his body due to the collision.

The motorcyclist, pillion rider, and the two passengers of car PGG 9823 were picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, the motorcyclist, pillion rider and one of the passengers were pronounced dead on arrival.

The passenger who was in the back seat was admitted suffering from a punctured spleen. The driver was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, and admitted with cerebral concussion.
